At the end of March 2019, Bitmain released the Antminer S17+, with a rated hash rate of 70T±3% and a wall power consumption of 2800W±3%. After the Antminer S17+ ran stably in the mining farm for several months, its actual operation was measured on-site.

1. Local climate and mining farm inlet air temperature

According to the online historical weather data, from June to August 2015-2019, the highest temperature records in the region were 32°C, 31°C, 36°C, 31°C, and 31°C each year. The mine is located in an industrial park, and the airflow is side-in and top-out. If the maximum ambient temperature in summer is calculated as 34°C, and according to the heat source characteristics of the mining farm, the maximum temperature of the air entering the workshop in summer should not exceed 37°C. The air temperature behind the curtain should not exceed 31℃, and the relative humidity should be between 30-80%.

2. Miner introduction

Antminer S17+ is an integrated design of chassis power supply. The power supply adopts a Universal APW9 power supply. Its bare metal size is 340*178*304.3mm. It can be placed horizontally or vertically according to the height space of the mining farm shelf; the mass is 11.3kg.

The miner’s heat dissipation is designed with front and rear double-tube fans. The fan protection net is arranged on the outer surface of the fan, which ensures that the operation and maintenance personnel of the mining farm avoid injury caused by accidentally touching the blades and protects the safety of the operation and maintenance personnel; the back of the fan is covered with a grille, which effectively prevents the operation and maintenance personnel from being injured. The foreign particles enter the high-speed rotating fan and hit the hash board.
The voltage of a single fan is 12V, the current is 2.7A, the maximum speed is 6000rpm, and the maximum air volume is 195cfm. According to the change of the series-parallel characteristics of the fans, the parallel fan design on one side of the miner significantly increases the ventilation volume; the series design of the fans on both sides of the miner significantly enhances the miner’s resistance to environmental resistance, that is, the ventilation volume of miners will not fluctuate violently with the change of the mining farm environment.
Many heat sinks are laid on the hash board inside the miner, and the area of a single heat sink gradually increases from the air inlet to the air outlet. This design loads heat transfer away, effectively transferring the heat generated by the chip to the air.

3. Measured data of miner operation

The on-site personnel selected miners at a particular position on the shelf for testing and obtained the following data.
Antminer S17+ has an air inlet temperature of 22.1°C and relative humidity of 70%; the air outlet temperature is 36.8°C, the air outlet humidity is 38%, and the average air volume is 370cfm; the power outlet temperature is 26.9°C. The overall power consumption of the Antminer S17+ is 3020W, and the miner control page shows that the average hash rate is 71TH/s, so the power consumption ratio of the Antminer S17+ is 42.14W/T.

Influence of air volume and air temperature change on miners' operation
According to relevant statistics, 45% of electronic product damage is due to excessive temperature. The high-temperature problem in the mining farm is mainly due to insufficient ventilation, which causes the temperature of the miner's air outlet to rise. To obtain the operating status of the miner in different ventilation environments, the on-site personnel observe the change of the miner's hash rate by changing the airflow passing through the miner. As a result, the following results were obtained.

As shown in the figure, when the miner's air inlet temperature is fixed at 31°C, and the miner's air volume is reduced from 370cfm to 340cfm, the miner's hash rate does not fluctuate significantly and remains at around 71TH/s. Continue to reduce the air volume, and the miner hash rate shows instability. Further, reduce the ventilation volume of the miners to 330cfm, and the miners will be protected from high temperatures immediately. Therefore, for the high-temperature environment of this mining farm in summer, the actual ventilation volume of each Antminer S17+ should not be less than 340cfm.
Under the corresponding different air volumes, the temperature environment of operating miners is also different. As the most typical data indicator, the relationship between the air temperature of the miner's air outlet and the hash rate can be seen from the figure. The air temperature of the Antminer S17+ air outlet should be less than 49.5°C as much as possible.

In addition to the air outlet air temperature limit that miners can bear, the fluctuation degree of ambient temperature changes also has a particular impact on the operation of miners. Therefore, the on-site personnel increased the miner's air inlet temperature from 22°C to 32°C at different times to observe the miner's hash rate change and finally obtained the following data.

It can be seen from the curve that the fluctuation of the miner's air inlet dimension varies in the range of 0-3.6°C/s, and the miner's hash rate changes slightly, which means that in the summer environment, the miner's hash rate is hardly affected by the temperature environment change.

The on-site personnel observed the change of the miner's hash rate by controlling the miner's air inlet humidity, and finally obtained the change curve of the miner's hash rate with the humidity of the miner's air inlet;
It can be seen from the curve that when the relative humidity of the miner's air intake is in the range of 30%-90%, the operating hash rate is 70.7-71.2TH/s, which is the standard operating hash rate. This shows that the change of the relative humidity of the workshop in a short time has little effect on the operation of the miners.
1) For miners in different positions of the mining farm, the airflow field environment is quite different, and the air volume obtained by the miners is quite different, which directly affects the temperature of the air outlet of the miners. To ensure that the miner's air outlet temperature is kept within an appropriate range, the airflow field of each miner position should be calculated during the design process of the mining farm. And by designing water curtains or other equipment to reduce the miners' intake air temperature in summer. During operation, the distance between miners and the water curtain should be greater than 2 meters to prevent water droplets from splashing into the miners; the workshop should be kept clean, and the number of particles with a diameter of not less than 0.5 μm in the workshop environment should be ≤32.5 million particles/m3.
2) The on-site personnel measured other 17 series models and found that the heat dissipation performance and environmental tolerance of S17, S17E, and T17E are the same. Still, the T17 type miners have higher requirements on the temperature environment, and the air outlet temperature cannot exceed 43 ℃.

4. Summary

· The integrated design of the S17+ makes the structure more compact and reasonable.
· S17+ miner fan selection and heat sink layout are reasonable, ensuring good heat dissipation for miners.
· In the running state, the average hash rate of miners is 71TH/s, the power consumption is 3605W, the power consumption ratio is 42.14W/T, and the actual air volume is 370cfm.
· S17, S17, S17E, and T17 models can withstand the outlet air temperature within 49.5 ℃, and T17 miners can withstand the outlet air temperature within 43.0 ℃.
· The relative humidity of the inlet air that the 17-type miner can withstand is above 30-90%.
